Longmire calls for security review after Clarkson incident

Sydney coach John Longmire says it’s a shame that post-game security for AFL coaches needs to be looked at after the incident in Adelaide last weekend involving Hawthorn’s Alastair Clarkson.

Longmire’s former North Melbourne teammate Clarkson was captured on video pushing a fan forcefully after the man confronted him on his walk back to his hotel on Saturday night following the loss to Port Adelaide.

Longmire said he walked back to the same hotel two weeks earlier, after Sydney’s game against the Power.

“On match days when you’re actually at the ground (security for coaches) is pretty good, there’s terrific security supplied by the AFL and the grounds,” Longmire said on Monday.

“But once the siren goes and you’re with your family or you’re walking across to your car and you want to get going, that needs to be looked at, which is a bit of a shame.”

Longmire said he didn’t encounter any problems on his walk back to the hotel in Adelaide.

“It was fine, but (what happened to Alastair) makes you think about it,” Longmire said.

“You need to be aware of where you go and what you do.

“These things make you reassess that.”

Longmire said it was hard to comment on the Clarkson incident after watching a brief clip and not knowing what happened in the leadup, that wasn’t shown on the footage.

“It’s very difficult to have a strong comment about what Alastair has done unless you have actually walked in those shoes,” Longmire said.

“It’s all a bit of a learning curve for everyone guess as far as coaches and players, that you have to be really mindful after games.”
