I am looking forward to watching the A-League finals, starting on Friday night with Adelaide versus Brisbane.

It should be very different to the game last Friday where Brisbane were lucky to beat Newcastle (2-1).

The previous SBS TV game for Brisbane Roar was against Melbourne Victory (15 April). This game showed that Brisbane will have to lift their game a little if they are to defeat any of the top teams.

That same week, on the Friday night (17 April), we saw Newcastle Jets again miss out with Sydney FC winning 4-3.

The previous Friday (10 April), I was impressed that Newcastle won 1-0 against Melbourne Victory. Both Victory and Newcastle had chances.

Does anyone notice a pattern here?

Ok, you get marks for noticing that I always watch the A-League on SBS every Friday night.

You might also notice Newcastle was mentioned a few times. I should also add that I watched Newcastle on TV a few other times.

– Friday March 6, Newcastle versus Sydney FC. This Round 20 clash was a fortunate win for Sydney. Neither team played outstanding football, but Newcastle were unlucky to lose (like about ten other games this season).

– Round 16 Friday 6 February. Newcastle Jets versus Brisbane Roar. Newcastle were once again unlucky losers going down 2-1, as Brisbane scored a late goal.

– Round 11 Friday 19 December. A famous win for Newcastle when they defeated Adelaide United 2-1.

– Round 6 Friday 14 November. Newcastle Jets versus Brisbane Roar. Newcastle were thoroughly beaten 4-0 by Brisbane Roar in a game that reflected more on the problems that were being revealed at Newcastle Jets. Brisbane Roar were also having problems at this stage of the season, but put it together for this game.

I am not wishing to complain about Friday night games on SBS. The network does not schedule the games. Honestly, I love finishing work on Friday and heading home to watch football on TV.

I am not even complaining about watching Newcastle. We have all followed their on-field and off-field dramas during the season. The FFA could not see these issues when they constructed the draw months before the season started.

The interesting thing is that for SBS-TV viewers, Newcastle Jets have almost become a benchmark for form going into the finals as we have watched the Jets play three of the finalists over the last three weeks.

Those with pay TV may have a completely different impression of recent form, as they have had the chance to watch more games.

I am definitely hoping we see lots of great goals such as Tarek Elrich’s effort for Adelaide against Melbourne City last week.

I will let each of you draw your own conclusions on who will win. Enjoy the finals.
