The West Coast Eagles will host the Greater Western Sydney Giants at Domain Stadium when the two teams clash in a huge match for two of the AFL’s best teams in the opening rounds. Can the Giants turn their head-to-head history against the Eagles around with a win? Join The Roar from 7.30pm (AEST) for live scores.

The Eagles have so far this season performed with a string of player out due to injury and have fast become one of the best defensive team in the competition averaging 64 tackles per game.

The Eagles average statistics however, are no match for the Giants with West Coast losing out in all fields (disposals, clearances, inside 50, contested possessions, free kicks) except for tackles and hit-outs where they closely account for GWS.

West Coast have won all three encounters against the Giants with a 111-point win in Round 8 of last season their most recent encounter.

The Giants are currently sitting in second position after winning three of their first four matches for the season. Greater Western Sydney are beginning to grow up and flex their muscles and are coming off a record 66-point win over the Gold Coast Suns at Manuka Oval.

The Giants however, are yet to beat the Eagles having experienced thrashings in all three encounters between the two clubs. As the Giants have proved throughout 2015 already however, they are able to upset any team and are one of the surprise packets of the 2015 AFL season and are a very different team compared to last year.

The Giants have never won a match against the Eagles. In the three matches played between the two clubs the Eagles have won all three times winning 23.12 (150) – 10.9 (69) in Round 3 2012, 23.17 (155) – 8.7 (55) in Round 9 2013 and 30.8 (188) – 12.5 (77) in Round 8 2014. The smallest margin between the two clubs is 81, more than GWS have ever scored against the Eagles with the most recent margin being the largest between the sides from opposite ends of the country – 111 points.

Currently in second position, the Giants are coming off their biggest win since their introduction into the Australian Football League in 2012 after smashing the Gold Coast Suns. However, the Giants will be forced to make one of the biggest road trips in the AFL when they travel to Perth.

The eighth-placed Eagles have defeated the Giants in all three encounters and the Giants have never scored more points against the Eagles than the margin between the two teams, however I expect the Giants to change this trend today.

Giants by 19.
