A freakish solo try by Cronulla’s Valentine Holmes has helped the Junior Kangaroos claim a tense 22-20 win over the Junior Kiwis on the Gold Coast.

Holmes showed why he has been tipped as a future Test player by Australian senior coach Tim Sheens by creating something from nothing to set up the hosts’ 14-10 halftime lead.

As the defence loomed, the Sharks fullback chipped down the sideline at full flight but the kick appeared to be going dead.

However, it bounced awkwardly and wrong footed Junior Kiwi fullback Jamayne Isaako, allowing the pursuing Holmes to beat three defenders and win the race for the ball and score just before halftime.

But man-of-the-match honours went to Parramatta back-rower Tepai Moeroa.

After a Holmes penalty goal locked up the scores at 16-all in the 60th minute, Moeroa bulldozed his way down the Kiwis’ right side defence to score what seemed the match-winner.

However, there were some anxious moments for the hosts when Kiwi winger Tony Tumusa pounced on a spilt ball to score and reduced the deficit to just two points in the 73rd minute.

But Junior Kiwis halfback Zach Dockar-Clay missed the sideline conversion and the Junior Kangaroos held onto the victory.
