Anthony Mundine has postponed the biggest fight of his career to date, against American Austin Trout, due to a “severe ear condition”.

The fight against Trout was to be the most important of Mundine’s career, with the Australian hoping it would set up a super welterweight bout with Saul Alvarez.

Instead, Mundine has announced he will not be able to fight, with doctors advising him that his ear condition could cause him “serious and potentially permanent damage” if he decided to go ahead with it.

Mundine tweeted the statement, which thanked Trout’s management team for cooperating in the decision to postpone the fight.

A new date for the WBC Silver super welterweight title has not been announced.

The statement from Mundine read as follows:

“Anthony Mundine vs Austin Trout in Texas (9th May) TO BE RESCHEDULED.

“Anthony Mundine has been forced to reschedule his WBC super welterweight Silver title defence against Austin Trout in Texas this weekend 9th May.

“Mundine is suffering from a severe ear condition which doctors say will cause him serious and potentially permanent damage if he continues with the bout. The ear condition was first noticed after sparring and got progressively worse the next day during his flight to the USA. Team Mundine sort (sic) immediate medical attention after landing in the U.S and have taken the medical advice to reschedule the fight for a later date very seriously. The safety of fighters is our first priority.

“Anthony Mundine is not allowed to be airborne for the next 2 weeks and will remain in Texas and then resume his training program for the rescheduled event.

“Team Mundine are understandably devastated by this unavoidable delay and thank Austin Trout’s management and the promoters Al Haymon, Leon Margules & Premier Boxing Champions for their understanding.

“We extend gratitude to the amazing efforts of the San Antonio Spurs medical team who have greatly assisted Anthony in managing his injury.”
