After defeating his childhood hero, Roger Federer, in three sets at the Madrid Open, Australian young-gun Nick Kyrgios finds himself staring at a likely seeding for the 2015 French Open.

The brilliant win was no walkover for the 20-year-old, with the game going to a tie-break in each set and Kyrgios needing to keep his nerves in check in the final set, holding off two match points to secure the victory 6-7 (2-7) 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (14-12).

Kyrgios faces American John Isner in the next round, but will also have his sights set on French Open glory when the year’s second Grand Slam kicks off in just over two weeks.

With a current world ranking of 35, Kyrgios is all but guaranteed to enter the tournament as a seeded player, and with plenty of confidence and form under his belt.

In the past Kyrgios has talked up his game on the clay surface, however his Grand Slam record currently refutes that, having secured just the one win at the two French Opens he has attended in his short career.

Following a win against a five-time French Open finalist on clay however, Australian tennis fans will be confident of a strong showing from Kyrgios, and many hopeful eyes will be fixed on Roland-Garros when the tournament gets underway on May 24.

Notably, the win adds another name to the growing list of big scalps on the Australian’s resume, after he famously overcame the then world number one, Rafael Nadal, at Wimbledon last year, on his way to a quarter final.

With a third round appearance at the 2014 US Open and then starting the year strongly with another quarter final at the Australian Open, Kyrgios is fast proving that he is up for it when the big moments come calling.

Speaking following the win, Australian Davis Cup captain Wally Masur said, “With the big serve and power of his forward, he [Kyrgios] can very, very dangerous at the French.”
