A Rockhampton-based construction magnate has put his hand up to buy a stake in the Gold Coast Titans in a move that could lead to the financially crippled NRL club play several home games in central Queensland.

Geoff Murphy told News Corp on Monday that he’s interested in owning or part-owning the Titans, who went into voluntary administration in February following drug allegations surrounding five players.

“I have indicated that I am prepared to step in and help the Titans if the situation arose,” Murphy said.

“It is in its infancy at the moment.

“I am looking at the options and this is something I see as a good option.”

The businessman’s aim is reportedly to have the Titans play several home matches a year in Rockhampton, which would lead to the Queensland state government chipping in to build a new stadium.

Titans chief executive Graham Annesley said last month the NRL club had no desire to leave their Cbus Super Stadium home in Robina.

The NRL – now the club’s sole owner – is reportedly yet to enter formal negotiations with Murphy.
