Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon, multiple-Group 1 winner Silent Achiever, and the tough Speediness have been retired following disappointing campaigns in Queensland.

Green Moon won the Melbourne Cup in 2012, following a dominant period where he won the Newcastle Cup, was second in the Caulfield Cup, won the Blamey Stakes and Turnbull Stakes, before victory for Lloyd Williams on the first Tuesday of November.

Green Moon didn’t win another race after the Melbourne Cup triumph, but was rarely too far away. His best performance was a second in the Group 1 2014 Australian Cup, and since then, has raced off the pace.

Green Moon retires with prizemoney just under $5.4 million, having won seven of 36 starts. As a stallion, a career at stud awaits.

More of a surprise was the retirement of Silent Achiever, who was at one stage aimed at the prestigious Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Europe, this October. The popular mare won 10 of her 36 starts, including big Group 1s in New Zealand and Australia, with the New Zealand Derby, the Ranvet Stakes, and the BMW all significant wins.

She won three Group 1s on the trot in 2014, and placed in the 2014 Cox Plate, her last result better than fourth.

She will become a valuable broodmare for owner Kevin Hickman.

Joining the pair in retirement is Speediness, the seven-year old gelding coming to the end of a career that just missed at Group 1 level, with two seconds in Group 1s. Speediness retires with more than a million dollars in prizemoney, with a record of seven wins from 39 starts.

The three retirements join Dissident, Hallowed Crown, Sacred Falls, Shooting To Win and Adelaide in the paddock, with all but Speediness heading for a long career at stud. Brazen Beau and Wandjina are further set to deplete the stocks at the top, following campaigns at Royal Ascot.
