Saturday is moving day at any tournament, and Rory McIlroy proved that this morning by firing in a Quail Hollow course record 61 in third round of the Wells Fargo.

The world’s number one stood on the 17th tee needing two birdies for a 59. But to the relief of his closest competitors, he finished with two pars.

But McIlroy set two more records – 11 birdies in his round, and five birdies on the trot from the 12th to the 16th.

During his birdie blitz, McIlroy was 10 under through 12 holes.

He was duelling with veteran Phil Mickelson at 10-under, and leading the tournament.

But at the end of the day McIlroy was 18-under, Mickelson 8-under, after a homeward nine of 39, that finished with a triple bogey seven,

So McIlroy goes into the final round with a four-shot lead over 2012 US Open champion Webb Simpson.

If McIlroy successfully completes his assignment tomorrow it will be a spectacular month for the young guns on the USPGA circuit.

Jordan Spieth won the Masters at 21, McIlroy the world matchplay at 26, and Rickie Fowler The Players at 26.

Matt Jones and Geoff Ogilvy are the best of the Australians at 7-under, while Aaron Baddeley is 2-under, and Steve Bowditch is even with the card.

Adam Scott, Robert Allenby, Cameron Percy, and Jarrod Lyle failed to make the cut.
