Racing Victoria has taken a big step to boost its digital coverage by signing a 10-year deal with Telstra to continue broadcasting races online.

Racing Victoria will adopt Telstra’s new digital video network Telstra Digital Video Network 2, as well as work with analytics and streaming company Ooyala, satellite broadcast services provider Globecast and video production firm Chief Entertainment will also be involved in the deal.

What does it all mean? Racing Victoria will be able to provide multiple broadcast feeds from all of their 24 main racecourses across the state of Victoria. The broadcasts will offer multiple camera angles not only to television viewers but for mobile devices as well.

The remaining 27 Victorian provincial and country tracks will be serviced by an enhanced satellite service provided by Globecast.

There is also the potential to have a major improvement on data analytics and tracking information.

“It allows us to deliver all of the on-course activity to everyone who is watching off the course,” said Racing Victoria chief executive Bernard Saundry.

“It will allow us to push out content to multiple broadcast partners and keep servicing our Racing.com. And it is also very important from an integrity point of view.”

The new technology will support on-course stewards, and provide better live conferencing via video technology will be made available to integrity officers, while photo-finish feeds and hawk-eye tracking technology will be integrated.

It’s important to note that the deal with Telstra doesn’t include broadcast rights, however there is the potential a separate deal could be made in the future. The deal adds to the sporting portfolio of the telecommunications giant who already owns the digital rights to the NRL and AFL.

They are also keen to add more sports and expand on their existing deals.

As well as this digital deal Racing Victoria is in negotiations with Channel Seven and Sky Racing for a permanent broadcasting rights agreement, after both Victoria and NSW split their rights when ThoroughVision Network (TVN) disbanded earlier this year.

A new agreement is hoped to be reached within the next few weeks, with an ideal scenario having races broadcast on one of Seven’s digital channels, while also having racing shown on Sky’s Thoroughbred Central channel.
