Novak Djokovic starts his campaign for a first French Open title tonight as he faces veteran Jarkko Nieminen in the opening round at the French Open.

Join The Roar for live scores of the match at the conclusion of the Rafael Nadal and Quentin Halys match. That should be around 11pm AEST.

Djokovic has achieved almost everything in the sport so far. He has won the Davis Cup, the other 3 Grand Slam titles, and all but one of the Masters events on the calendar.

The one thing that has eluded him is a French Open title.

This year looks to be his best chance of winning one with an out of form Nadal in his half and Federer on the other side of the draw.

He faces a potentially tough prospect first up in Jarkko Nieminen. The Finn, who is the country’s best ever player, has won two titles in his illustrious career. He also reached 400 wins in the ATP this year as well.

He won’t be afraid of Djokovic and will also feel he has nothing to lose.

His form though hasn’t been great recently. Nieminen has only won twice in his last five matches.

He also hasn’t defeated a top ten player since 2013 when he defeated Juan Martin Del Potro in Monte Carlo.

In comparison Djokovic has won his last 23 matches which has included 4 Masters Titles in Monte Carlo, Rome, Indian Wells, and Miami.

In fact the Serbian has only lost twice this year in the Middle East to Federer and Ivo Karlovic respectively. These two have faced each other 5 times with Djokovic leading the ledger 4-1.

Nieminen’s only win came in 2009 when he defeated the world number 1 in Sydney. A lot has changed in six years though and it would be a massive surprise if the Finn wins tonight.

Djokovic has far too much class for him and should win in straight sets.

Nieminen may be competitive for a set, and win one, but he won’t be able to sustain that for five sets. Djokovic should record a comfortable victory.

PREDICTION – Djokovic 3-0
