The world number 91 Vitalia Diachenko has no form to speak of, with little tennis played this year. Included within her last 10 match ups are her first-round exit at the Australian Open and her two games from the Hobart International. She has also had to retire from tournaments in Moscow and Saint Petersburg this season.

For Diachenko this is her second French Open, having competed previously in 2009 making it to the second round. Since then she has played in three grand slams never making it out of the first round.

Diachenko’s first round victory was against Sefanie Voegele. It took three sets to win, However, she played dominantly in the first two sets. After dropping the first set 6 games to 4 she managed to hit back in the final two sets only dropping five games.

Sharapova has been in fantastic form in the lead up to the French Open. Interestingly her last 10 matches have all been on clay, in both the Madrid Masters and Rome Masters of which she has won 9, being knocked out of the Madrid Masters in the semi finals by Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Her victories have included beating the likes of Caroline Wozniacki, Jarmila Gajdsova and Carla Suarez Navarro. Winning 9 of her last 10, and winning the final of the Rome Masters shows what good form the world number 2 is in.

Sharapova’s grand slam history is very impressive, to be expected of a world number two, particularly at Rolland Garros where she has won the event twice (2012 and 2014), and finished runner up in 2013. She has also made the semi-finals a further two times out of her 12 French Open Appearances.

Sharapova’s first round match at the French Open was against Kaia Kanepi, who she dominantly defeated in straight sets. Throughout the match she only dropped six games and looked to be in top form, as she was before the French Open kicked off.

The pair have never faced off before so there is no head to head record to look at.

PREDICTION: It would be a massive shock if Sharapova was to be knocked out by a player is who is ranked much lower in the world and has little form to speak of. In fact, it would be a shock if it went to three sets, although Diachenko will fight hard.
