Starting off with Wawrinka, and by his lofty standards his form coming into the French Open is a little bit under par. He like many have been playing most of their games on the clay court in recent times, however Wawrinka has dropped three of his last ten games coming into the French Open.

He has been knocked out in the quarter finals at Monte Carlo by Grigor Dimitrov, the round of 16 in the Madrid Masters again by Grigor Dimitrov, the semi finals at the Rome Masters by Roger Federer and in the quarter finals at Geneva by Federico Delbonis. In saying that he did manage to beat Rafael Nadal in Rome.

Wawrinka might have won the 2014 Australian Open and made the semis in 2015, but he hasn’t got a great Grand Slam record which only gets worse when looking at the Rolland Garros column.

In ten attempts at the clay court Grand Slam Wawrinka has only made it to the quarter finals once, getting knocked out there in 2013. Meanwhile in 2014 he was knocked out in the first round.

Wawrinka’s first round match at the 2015 French Open was against Marsel Ilhan from Turkey. It was a dominant and easy victory in straight sets for Wawrinka only conceding eight games over the three sets, and whilst he would like to put on another dominant display, it probably wont be as easy against Lajovic.

Lajovic, like Wawrinka has won seven of his last ten games including the first round of the 2015 French Open. However in saying that his overall career record for wins, is well under 50 % winning just 30 from 76 games. It is the same situation when you look at Lajovic’s 2015 stats which reads 9 wins and 13 losses.

It doesn’t make for the greatest form reading although he has had a couple of decent wins against the likes of world number 36 Jack Sock and world number 53 Borna Coric. Coric’s particularly which was in Rome came in straight sets.

Lajovic managed to make it to the fourth round of the French Open on his debut in the event last season which could be considered a good achievement. However in his other 4 grand slams he has not progressed past the 2nd round.

Lajovic’s first round match up was against the Argentinian Maximo Gonzalez who is ranked 114th. Despite his low ranking it looked like a thrasging normally handed out by one of the top guns of the event as Lajovic won 6-3, 6-3, 6-1.

PREDICTION: Lajovic obviously carries decent form into the match and Wawrinka struggles on clay, but the world number 8 should have to much for Lajovic in what could be an interesting match. Don’t expect Wawrinka to cruise through this one though.

Wawrinka in four sets.
