Eighth seed Swiss Stan Wawrinka looks to progress into the fourth round of the 2015 French Open this evening when he takes on American Steve Johnson in what could certainly be an interesting match up.

Join The Roar for live scores of this game from around 10pm (AEST) when the match gets going following the Safarova versus Lisicki match on Court 1.

Wawrinka has had a mixed lead up to the French open on the clay court losing games he should be winning against the likes of Federico Delbonis and Grigor Dimitrov. However he won against the likes of Rafael Nadal on clay in Rome. His form certainly isn’t where he would like it however.

Interestingly, looking at Wawrinka’s history in the French Open he has only made the quarter final stages once in his 10 attempts at the event. He was also knocked out rather embarrassingly in the first round last year, having taken out the Australian Open not long before it.

So far in his 2015 French Open campaign, Wawrinka has had two relatively easy victories. Firstly, he managed to knock out Marsel Ilhan in straight sets only dropping eight games over the three sets. He then moved on and managed to knock out Dusan Lajovic in four sets. Wawrinka will not have been happy dropping a set and will have to improve his performance to overcome Johnson.

Johnson meanwhile, has had a clay season where he has been matched up against some tough opposition. None the less, many of these games have gone the full distance and he has won more than half of his games so far in the year.

Johnson has previously competed in two French Open, with his best performance coming in 2014 when he was knocked out in the second round. He also made it to the third round of the Australian Open earlier in the season before being knocked out by Nei Kishikori.

Where it gets interesting is looking at Johnson’s first round match up. He came up against 26th seed Guillermo Garcia – Lopez and managed to knock him out in four sets. The set he lost was in a tie breaker and he won the other three sets holding Lopez to just three games in each set.

His second round fixture was another four set win against Sergiy Stakhovsky winning two sets in tie breakers.

Johnson has already played a lot of tennis at the French Open, being knocked out in Round 2 of the doubles tournament. This could become a factor if the match goes five sets.

The pair have never matched up before, but based on Johnson’s recent form which has been strong it can be assumed the betting odds are a little bit harsh on Johnson.

PREDICTION: It would be a shock if Wawrinka was to be knocked out of the French Open in the third round, being the eighth seed but for mine it could be an interesting game. Johnson is going to push Wawrinka who probably isn’t in the sort of form he wants to be in all the way in this one.

Wawrinka in five sets.
