Match result:

Andy Murray has made it 3 wins out of 3 against Nick Kyrgios in the third round of the French Open.

MURRAY 6 6 6
KYRGIOS 4 2 3

In a match, which saw chances to both players, Murray would take all of his to break the confidence of the Australian and move into the 4th round of the Open.

It would also end the Australian presence in singles at the French Open after Thanasi Kokkinakis would also lose in the third round to Novak Djokovic.

The match started with both players breaking each other in the 3rd and 4th game of the set.

Both would have loose service games as their opponent pounced.

After holding for a 3-2 lead, Kyrgios would have a break point, but fail to convert it as Murray held on to level at 3-3.

This would cost the Australian dearly as Murray won the break in the next game and took the first set.

He would win two of the remaining three games of the set to take it 6-4.

The second was a repeat of the first as the first four games went on serve.

Kyrgios would then be punished for not taking his chances again.

The Aussie would be broken, for a 3-2 lead to Murray, and then have three break points in the 6th game.

At 15-40, he missed an easy put away forehand, which would hurt him dearly.

Murray would save the other two break points and hold for a 4-2 lead.

This rattled Kyrgios and he did not win a game for the rest of the set.

Murray would break again and take it 6 games to 2.

Kyrgios then started the next set well by gaining an early break in the third.

Unfortunately for him, he couldn’t consolidate it, and Murray broke back.

The Brit would then win 5 of the last 6 games to dominate the set and seal the match.

Kyrgios didn’t play badly, as the scoreline suggests, by the lopsided win to Murray.

Murray lifted his game when it counted, and Kyrgios struggled to take his opportunities.

He had 10 break point chances in the match and only got two of them.

Murray, on the other hand, won 7 out of 13.

28 unforced errors also didn’t help the Aussie.

He will learn a lot from this and take it into the grass court season where he defends a lot of points.

He is the defending champion at the Nottingham Challenger and also a quarter finalist from last year’s Wimbledon.

Kyrgios will start his grass season in s’Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands in just over a weeks time.

This time it is in the third round of the French Open and the odds are in the Australian favour to potentially cause a boil over.

At the Australian Open, in their quarter final match, Kyrgios simply ran out of puff. After a five-set marathon match against Andreas Seppi, in the fourth round, Kyrgios struggled to find the energy to compete and beat Murray.

In comparison Murray had only lost one set on his way to meeting Kyrgios and had plenty of energy for the match.
Tonight there are no excuses for Kyrgios with fitness. He has hardly played at the French Open after being gifted a walkover in the second round.

In the first round he defeated Denis Istomin in straight sets, before Kyle Edmund withdrew from his second round match with the Australian.

Kyrgios hasn’t played a singles match since Monday, and now plays one tonight.

Murray, who has struggled at Roland Garros, compared to the other Grand Slams has had two relatively comfortable wins so far.

He defeated Facundo Arguello in straight sets, and Joao Sousa in four sets, to progress to tonight.

This match promises to be everything, and so much more. It’s the power of Kyrgios, against the counter punching of Murray.

This, in some way, is why Murray has had no problem with Kyrgios so far. He’s been able to use the power to punch back and win the point.

In two meetings, at the Australian Open and the Toronto Masters, Murray has won them in straight sets. Clay offers a different challenge though. Murray, despite being on a 12 match winning streak, struggles on the surface.

Kyrgios, on the other hand, has had some of his best results on the surface. He has won two Challengers and made the final at Estoril recently. He also defeated Roger Federer in Madrid.

This is a match the Australian can win. If he can serve well, and dictate the baseline, then the Aussie can challenge. I’d like to see him attack the net as well and use his movement to trouble Murray

It may take five sets, and a marathon match, but Kyrgios can trouble Murray tonight.

The Brit is the favourite, and rightly so, but Kyrgios is a huge chance.

PREDICTION – Murray – just – 3-2
