Ana Ivanovic will be looking to continue her good form against Elina Svitolina when the two face off in the quarters of the French Open.

Since 2012, when the two faced each other for the first time, Ivanovic has won all six meetings between the two. This includes a meeting between the two last year at the French Open when the Serbian number 1 won in straight sets.

Ivanovic has dominated the contests, losing just one set to the Ukrainian, in those six matches. That was at the Indian Wells Masters last year. They have also played recently with Ivanovic defeating Svitolina 6-4 6-3 at the recent Madrid Masters.

For Svitolina, this Grand Slam has been a historic one for herself, and her country. A win over Alize Cornet, to make tonight’s clash, gave Svitolina her first Grand Slam quarter final.

The three time champion on the WTA tour is also the first female player from the Ukraine to achieve the feat. Two more wins, which would put her into the final, would move her into the top ten in the world. That would also be an achievement not yet reached by a Ukrainian female player.

When these types of records occur, the player gets a significant boost, and more support from the home nation. You just have to ask her opponent about that.

In 2008, after Novak Djokovic became the first Serbian to win a Grand Slam title, Ivanovic followed suit at the French Open later that year.

Using the lift from the home nation Ivanovic played inspired tennis to take her only Grand Slam title so far.

This year’s quarter final, after a win over Ekaterina Makarova in the 4th round, is the first time she has reached this far in the event since winning it in 2008. Ivanovic will be hoping that happens again in 2015 and she can win a Grand Slam title.

If Ivanovic is to win today then she will need to serve well. Her serve can be a problem at times but thankfully for her that hasn’t been the case in this year’s event.

The other area of focus for Ivanovic will be the power in her game. Svitolina main area of attack is extending rallies in the match.

Her focus is to move her opponent around, hit winners, and force her opponent to make errors.

In the six matches between the two, Ivanovic has come out on top, but if she starts to hit errors then Svitolina is right in the match.

This promises to be a close match with both players giving their all to make the semi-final. Ivanovic is the favourite and deserves to be with her record over Svitolina.

Svitolina though will win a set tonight and trouble Ivanovic. The Serbian will win in a close contest.
