Stuart Dew is the coach Carlton require for the rebuild ahead.

Dew was a premiership player at Port Adelaide in 2004 and Hawthorn in 2008. More importantly, he was also involved at both clubs at different times in their development.

He was at Port Adelaide as they entered the AFL, and was recruited at Hawthorn a year out of retirement to help prepare the team to challenge for the flag.

Dew played under some of the game’s most esteemed coaches: the legendary John Cahill, who coached Port Adelaide to 10 SANFL premierships, Mark Williams, Alastair Clarkson and he is now working with John Longmire – all have won premierships. These respected coaches have no doubt helped mould Dew the person, and the football philosophies he believes in.

Dew has been at the Sydney Swans since 2009, and is so highly rated that Paul Roos was keen to take Dew with him to Melbourne as an assistant.

Carlton has a disjointed list that requires a lot of development, and Dew’s first two years at Sydney were as a development coach. In 2011 he looked after the defence and is now in charge of stoppages. Having been involved in more than one discipline will have rounded his overall ability to coach and structure a competitive outfit.

Carlton has a rich history and heritage, but it has been 20 years since they last tasted grand final success. What must make Stuart Dew attractive to Carlton is he has had success at every club he has been involved with.

Some will argue at 35 years of age he does not have the experience, but how much is experience is enough? Dew has been involved in an AFL football environment for almost 20 years.
