Steve Smith missed out on his maiden Test double hundred by just one run as Australia took control of the second Test against the West Indies.

The No.3 was dismissed for 199 as the tourists made 399 in their first innings.

In reply, the Windies were struggling at 3-35 at tea on day two, still 364 behind the tourists.

Nathan Lyon took 2-1 off four overs, moving past Hugh Trumble as Australia’s most successful Test off-spinner.

Lyon bowled Kraigg Brathwaite (4) to take his 142nd Test wicket and eclipse Trumble’s 111-year-old mark of 141 scalps.

He then trapped Darren Bravo LBW (14) to leave the Windies reeling at 3-25.

Mitchell Starc (1-3) has the other wicket, removing debutant Rajendra Chandrika for a duck.

Earlier, Smith appeared set to become the first Australian to score a Test double-hundred away from home since Jason Gillespie’s remarkable 201no against Bangladesh in 2006.

The 26-year-old passed his previous highest Test score of 192 made against India at the MCG in December via overthrows.

But a superb yorker from Taylor, who finished with career-best figures of 6-47, denied Smith the milestone.

He’s just the third Australian to be dismissed for 199 in a Test match, joining Steve Waugh against the Windies in Barbados in 1999 and Matthew Elliott, who was undone on the score by England’s Darren Gough during the 1997 Ashes.

Resuming on 4-258, Taylor did the early damage as the Windies took the second new ball.

The Jamaican quick claimed the scalps of Shane Watson (25) and Brad Haddin (22) to secure his third Test five-wicket haul at Sabina Park.

Jason Holder finished with 2-64 while paceman Kemar Roach (1-113) and left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul (1-124) were both expensive for the hosts.
