Chief executive Grant Mayer has quit the Wests Tigers with immediate effect, the NRL club announced on Monday.
The bombshell follows just one day after Parramatta boss Scott Seward also walked away from his club.
Mayer has steered the joint venture for the past two seasons after taking over from former CEO Stephen Humphreys midway through 2013.
The NRL side has struggled in that time, finishing second last in 2013 and 13th in 2014.
And despite last Friday night’s 34-6 upset over South Sydney, the Tigers have lost six of their past eight games to remain outside the top eight in 11th spot.
Club chair Marina Go said the Tigers were now looking to move in a different direction.
“Wests Tigers would like to thank Grant for his diligence and dedication to the club,” Go said in a statement.
“We look to take the next step in our evolution and a fresh approach to take us to the next level as a professional, world-class sporting organisation.
“Wests Tigers is looking forward to achieving the goals that are critical for a successful future for the club, both on-field and off-field.”
Mayer was previously CEO of Manly between 2006-09 and also held posts at the AFL’s Greater Western Sydney Giants, Catalans Dragons in the Super League, and Canterbury-Bankstown.
He was embroiled in a public spat with captain Robbie Farah over the support of then-coach Mick Potter last year, and also oversaw the appointment of current coach Jason Taylor later on in the season.
Mayer also engineered the contract renewals of a stack of the club’s prodigious talents, including James Tedesco, Luke Brooks and Mitchell Moses.
General manager of football operations Phil Moss will step into the chief executive role until a fulltime replacement is found for Mayer.
