UFC president Dana White has confirmed on UFC Tonight that John Dodson (17-6) will get another chance to claim UFC gold when he takes on dominant flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson (22-2-1) for the second time.

The first time these two locked horns was back in January 2013, where Johnson earned a unanimous decision victory in a bout that received fight of the night honours.

The champion is riding an eight-fight win streak, the most recent against Kyoji Horiguchi (15-2), whom he submitted with an arm-bar in the last second of the last round to earn the latest finish in UFC history, as well as submission of night honours.

Dodson has been on a three-fight win streak since his loss to Johnson, taking out Darrell Montague (13-4), John Moraga (16-4) and Zach Makaovsky (19-6) along the way.

Dodson also possesses the most knockout power in the flyweight and the bantamweight divisions. The former Ultimate Fighter winner has ended four of his six UFC wins by knockout, the most notable against bantamweight title holder T.J. Dillashaw (11-2) back in 2011.

Johnson on the other hand is the most technically sound fighter on the UFC roster, and should arguably be the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world. The champion has proved time and time again why he deserves the belt.

Johnson versus Dodson is probably the best flyweight fight the UFC can put on right now, but with up-and-coming talent such as Olympic gold medallist Henry Cejudo (9-0) working his way up, Johnson’s path could get interesting.

Should the champion continue his dominant reign, there will literally be no one left for him to fight at flyweight. Vacating the belt and moving up to bantamweight may be on the cards should that happen.

Right now no date has been set for the flyweight bout, however it is rumoured that it may take place as the co-main event of UFC 191 in September.
