Sebastien Buemi has jumped into Formula E Championship contention by taking his third Formula E race win at Battersea Park in London.

The Swiss driver took a lights to flag victory to jump within five points of championship leader Nelson Piquet on a day when his rivals took the defensive route and inevitably found themselves off the podium.

Both Brazilian title contenders found themselves in a tight contest within the serpentine confines of Battersea Park, with Piquet making an ill-timed move on Lucas di Grassi and coming off second-best.

Buemi’s win effectively handed his team, e.Dams-Renault, the title with one more race in hand to play out tomorrow. Alain Prost, four-time Formula One champion and team principal of the e.Dams-Renault team was ecstatic with the result.

“It’s fantastic,” Prost said.

“The season was difficult but we dominated a little bit. It’s good to have a double event, so we keep motivation for tomorrow. The team has done a great job and we did what we wanted to do.

“There is only a few points difference and as what I liked in Formula One, stealing the championship in the last race is how you keep motivation.”

The final this Sunday now sees a three-way fight for the title with Nelson Piquet Jr leading the chase on 138 points. Sebastien Buemi is on 133 points while Lucas di Grassi is third on 125 points.

While the double header format represents a clean slate for every team on Sunday, on form Buemi looks best place to take the title, having had speed to spare and with a clearer directive than his rivals Di Grassi and Piquet.

“It’s a great day and good to be back in the title fight,” Buemi said.

“It’s going to be tough tomorrow as it’s difficult to beat the others, but we have strong pace and we take it session by session. We have nothing to lose tomorrow, so we go for another win.”
