The Matildas will be out to avenge last year’s Asian Cup defeat to rivals Japan in the quarter finals of the 2015 Women’s World Cup. Join us for live scores and commentary from 5:45am (AEST).

The dream of a World Cup final edged closer for the Matildas last Monday as they edged out Brazil in a tight, defensive-oriented affair.

They return to Edmondton, which boasts a Matilda-friendly atmosphere, with Commonwealth Stadium made up of green and gold seats.

Katrina Gorry started on the bench against Brazil and her class was evident with one pass in particular cutting the Samba Queens’ defence in half, allowing Lisa De Vanna a shot on goal that ultimately fell at the feet of Kyah Simon for the only goal of the game.

It will be interesting to see if coach Alen Stajcic goes with the same set-up this game, as Gorry’s impact off the bench was massive against a tiring Brazil.

Japan eased past the Netherlands two days later, who seemed to lack ideas against arguably the best side in the world. Led by Aya Miyama, Japan have had a strong World Cup, but these sides are very evenly matched.

Japan’s craftiness is the main danger, with their goals against the Netherlands coming off stunning set plays that left the Dutch defence questioning what had happened.

Australia has made huge steps since their loss to Japan last year with their attack one of the highlights of the World Cup so far. However, don’t discount their defence as the Matildas didn’t look like conceding against Brazil for large portions.

While Brianna Davey was brave for Australia in the absence of Lydia Williams last year, it is hard to argue that Williams isn’t a superior player. Caitlin Foord has also taken another step in this World Cup, and Laura Alleway has been a staple in defence in the absence of Clare Polkinghorne.

Prediction
The extra two-day rest and a big improvement on last year should see the Matildas go through, but Japan have the experience, which makes me think this will go to extra time.

1-1.
