Match Result:

Nick Kyrgios has advanced through to the second round at Wimbledon with a straight-sets win against Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman.

Kyrgios started strongly, taking the first set 6-0, and continued to give his opponent little room to enter the contest, claiming the second set 6-2.

Schwartzman was able to push Kyrgios to a tie-break in the third, but Kyrgios was simply too good, closing the match out in under 90 minutes with an 8-6 win in the tie-break.

After making the quarterfinals last year highlighted by a spectacular victory over Rafael Nadal, Kyrgios returns to the All England Club eager to match his electrifying tournament run just 12 months ago.

Despite being coach-less and having limited preparation, the 20-year-old looks confident and raring to go at The Championships of 2015, notwithstanding an unconvincing performance in his last match at the Aegon Championships against Stan Wawrinka (going down 6-3 6-4).

The first half of 2015 has been a roller-coaster ride for the boy from Canberra to say the least. After matching (or possibly exceeding) the public’s expectations at Melbourne Park, Kyrgios has made just one ATP Final in Estoril losing to Richard Gasquet in straight sets.

Although experiencing first round exits in Sydney, Barcelona, Rome and London, the Australian has been able to lift his ranking to 29 to be seeded 26th at Wimbledon.

Arguably his best performances of the year came in Madrid defeating the Swiss maestro Roger Federer matching his epic contest with Andreas Seppi on Hisense Arena six months ago.

His opponent tonight will be Diego Schwartzman of Argentina. The 22-year-old will be no walkover for Kyrgios, reaching a career high ranking of 57 earlier this year and is currently sitting 63rd. His rise up the rankings in 2015 can be highlighted through his courageous run in Istanbul, where Schwartzman made the semi-finals.

Players he defeated included Blaz Kavcic, Jurgen Melzer and Santiago Giraldo, before he pushed Roger Federer in a tight encounter losing 7-5 in the third. Yet despite this pefromance, Schwartzman has had very limited preparation coming into The Championships. His last match was in Paris at Roland Garros and the Argentine is clearly suited to clay, as seen by his performances on the surface compared to grass.

In terms of tactics in this opening encounter, Kyrgios seems to have the upper hand in terms of service and pace of shot across the court. The Argentine has been serving at just 60% on the first serve and 50% on the second serve. These poor returns have shown through the ace and double faults counts, with Schwartzman serving 69 and 106 aces and double faults respectively this year.

Although despite having issues on the serve, Schwartzman has been solid on the return so far in 2015. Over his career he has converted 47% of break point opportunities and won 53% of second serve return points.

Although no need to panic Roarers, Kyrgios might just prove to be a step up for the Argentine in terms of pace and power. The Aussie is raring to go and this is a place of (usually) good omens for our men.

Prediction:
A big match here coming up for Kyrgios to find some of his better form at the All England Club. Schwartzman won’t be an easy beat but Kyrgios should be too strong. A straight sets win for the 26th seed should be in order. Can we see the ‘Wild Thing’ get back to his best?
