Match Results:

Serena Williams 6 4
Margarita Gasparyan 6 1

Serena Williams progresses to the second round of Wimbledon 2015 with a commanding win over Margarita Gasparyan despite being put under all sorts of pressure early in the contest.

Williams had the first serve and was broken in the first game of the match, unable to settle into her style with the qualifier Gasparyan all over her racing to a two games to love lead.

However Williams eventually hit back breaking Gasparyan and winning the first set.

The second set was more or less one sided, although Gasparyan managed to stay in the game fairly well at different stages within individual rallies.

All in all a game that was a lot closer than what most were expecting.

World number one and top seed for Wimbledon 2015, Serena Williams kicks off her campaign for a sixth title and third grand slam this year when she takes on Russian Margarita Gasparyan in the first round. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary of this match from around10:00pm (AEST).

Williams last match was the final at Rolland Garros, leaving her with exactly zero form on grass. This then leaves some question marks heading into her first round match today against Gasparyan.

There is no denying however that Williams has had a fantastic season so far, winning both the Australian Open and the French Open. With two grand slams under her belt already and two to go she will be looking to become the first woman since Steffi Graf to win all four Slams in a year.

At Rolland Garros Williams was often dropping the first set and thus, it can be assumed her form was possibly not the greatest. She won’t be able to keep doing that at Wimbledon and expect to go all the way.

Gasparyan (ranked 113) is a qualifier for Wimbledon 2015, having won all three of her qualifying games in straight sets. Before the qualifying tournament she had only played one game on grass since the clay court season came to an end. This was a straight sets loss in Birmingham to Irina Falconi. Gasparyan has also entered the doubles tournament at Wimbledon.

In stark contrast to Williams, Gasparyan has never played at Wimbledon, making her grand slam debut with a first round exit at the French Open earlier this year. She also attempted to qualify for the US Open last year.

The pair have never faced off before this first round clash at Wimbledon, however looking at all the evidence, namely the fact that Williams is the world’s top ranked player, it is hard to even understand why there are betting odds on this game. Serena a $1.01 favourite.

The winner of this clash will move onto the second round and be facing off against either Timea Babos or Petra Cetkovska.

Prediction: It could realistically be one of the most one sided games of the tournament. Serena is coming off a massive win at Rolland Garros and the only question will be whether she can carry this form onto the grass having not played since the final at Rolland Garros.

Williams in straight sets.
