The fixtures for the 2015-16 A-League season have been released and it’s going to be an exciting opening weekend of football, kicking off on October 8.

We open the campaign at Pirtek Stadium, where the 2012-13 finalists – Western Sydney Wanderers and Brisbane Roar – visit each other on the opening day. A change of schedule means the first game will be held on a Thursday night.

The following Friday sees the defending champions Melbourne Victory begin their title defence away from home, at Adelaide Oval, against Josep Gombau’s Adelaide United. The showcase of the first round.

It’s all happening in Sydney on October 10 as the Central Coast Mariners hope for a bigger and brighter season under Tony Walmsley. They host Perth Glory at Central Coast Stadium.

It’s a battle between the waters as former Sky Blue striker Corey Gameiro returns home to face Sydney FC with new club Melbourne City at Allianz Stadium. City are looking for another finals place finish, while Sydney FC will want another season like the last.

We close up the opening round in beautiful Wellington where Phoenix takes on Newcastle Jets at Westpac Stadium. New head coach Scott Miller wants to impress and show the A-League what he’s made of.

A-League derbies
The most attended A-League derby is the Sydney Derby, and they’ll meet for the first time in Round 3 at Allianz Stadium.

They won’t face off again until Round 15 where they’ll play at Pirtek Stadium and once again at Allianz Stadium for Round 20.

The Melbourne Derby has become a famous and heavily watched match as Victory face City in Round 2 at Etihad Stadium. Victory will look to assert their dominance of Melbourne as we saw in their semi-final last season, where City were beaten 3-0.

Rounds 11 and 19 will see AAMI Park host the two final Melbourne derbies.

Newcastle Jets only get to host one F3 Derby at Hunter Stadium in Round 6, while the other two will be at Central Coast Stadium in Round 21 and on the final day of the season.

The Jets did not win any of their F3 derbies last season, losing one and drawing the other two.

One of the most famous derbies in A-League history, the Big Blue, produced the highest scoring matches last season, consisting of a 0-0 draw and two 3-3 draws.

It was a famous Big Blue grand final where Melbourne Victory finally beat Sydney FC 3-0.

The two meet each other for the first time in Round 6 at Allianz. The other two derbies will be hosted in Melbourne, with Round 16 at Etihad and Round 21 at AAMI Park.
