The highlighting of a still shot of veteran Sydney AFL star Adam Goodes allegedly perpetrating a squirrel grip on Richmond’s Taylor Hunt has earned the ire of the Swans.
A shot of the alleged incident at the SCG last Friday has appeared on various media platforms – and it hasn’t gone down well.
“We think as a club that the way that was highlighted was disgraceful,” Sydney coach Longmire said on Monday.
“If you go back and look at the incident, not even an incident, that piece of play in its entirety and you look at it in fast play, it’s amazing that bit of play was actually highlighted in a still shot.
“If you still a lot of pieces of play during an AFL game of football, I’m sure you can make an issue out of a number of different things.”
Asked if it was highlighted because Goodes was the player involved, Longmire said: “that’s for other people to answer.
“But you go and have a look at that whole piece of play in its entirety and make your own mind up.
“You guys make your own decisions and make it on an informed basis.
“When you have an informed view of it and you look at the whole piece of play in its entirety whilst the game is unfolding, rather than a particular still of a moment in time, I think you have a more balanced view of it.”
It’s another addition to the controversy that seems to have followed the dual Brownlow Medallist and all-time Swans game leader around over the last couple of years.
He was racially vilified at matches in Melbourne in 2013 and 2014 and also online and has been criticised in some quarters for allegedly staging for free kicks and sliding into opponents’ legs.
More recently, he was booed at a number of games, but said last week he had moved on from that and didn’t want to give the issue any more oxygen.
