Wawrinka in three sets. 6-2, 7-5, 7-6
After winning at Roland Garros earlier this month, Stan Wawrinka will be looking to win his second Grand Slam for the calendar year at Wimbledon with his journey beginning against Joao Sousa. Currently ranked 4th, Wawrinka is one of the favourites to win Wimbledon after defeating Novak Djokovic (4-6 6-4 6-4 6-4) in the final at the French Open.
More recently, he lost in the second round of the Aegon Championships to Kevin Anderson 7-6 7-6. Despite this loss, we can be sure Wawrinka will put this most recent form behind him and step up for the biggest Slam of the year.
Sousa is currently ranked 45th and since his last meeting with Wawrinka has improved drastically, qualifying for the final at Geneva, beating Vasek Pospisil and Denis Istomin along the way.
Despite his lowly ranking when compared to the Swiss champion, Sousa has a genuine chance at redemption in taking his first career win against Wawrinka. The right-hander is ready and raring to go for The Championships.
Wawrinka and Sousa have met twice in their careers. At the 2015 Madrid Masters Wawrinka defeated Sousa in straight sets 7-6 7-5. Their first matchup was in the first round of Wimbledon 2014 where Wawrinka defeated Sousa in straight sets 6-3 6-4 6-3.
Prediction: Stanislas Wawrinka will be far too strong for Sousa.
