The sixth seed for Wimbledon 2015, Thomas Berdych gets his campaign underway with a first round match up against Frenchman Jeremy Chardy. Join The Roar for live scores from around 1:30am (AEST), following the Cepelova vs Halep match on Court 1.

The 29 year old Berdych from the Czech Republic has shot up the rankings in recent times having a really good year so far, winning 37 from 48 matches played. This included a semi-final appearance at the Australian Open against Andy Murray. Since the clay court phase of the season finished and the players moved onto the grass, Berdych has only played the one tournament on grass which was in Halle.

After two wins against much lower ranked opponents in Victor Estrella and Borna Coric, he lost to Ivo Karlovic in three sets. The loss may leave him a little bit unsure about his form leading into Wimbledon.

In 11 attempts at Wimbledon, Berdych has had mixed results, however it is the only Grand Slam that he has managed to make the final at, an achievement which came in 2010. In saying that he has never gone past the quarter finals in any other year, which he has done in all the other Grand Slams.

Interestingly enough, looking at Berdych’s career winning percentages his grass winning percentage of just a tick over 70 per cent is actually higher than his career winning percentage which sits at around 66 per cent. Grass, based on stats is actually his best surface to play on.

World number 37 Chardy has only played one match on grass since the French Open which came against Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis at the AGEON Championships. However it was disappointment for Chardy as he went down in three sets. In saying that, similar to Berdych, grass is the surface Chardy has his best winning percentage on. At over 60 per cent, it is 5 per cent better than his career winning percentage and this will make Chardy feel a little bit better about having no form to count on coming into Wimbledon.

Chardy had his best Wimbledon performance in 2008 and had his best result last year with a fourth round exit. Overall his best Grand Slam performance was at the Australian Open of 2013 when he made the quarter finals.

Berdych and Chardy have played three times before, twice in Dubai and once in Munich with Chardy only ever able to win one set against Berdych. Whilst they have never met at a Grand Slam or on grass you would have to think those two factors only push the odds further in Berdych’s favour, factoring in experience levels at Grand Slams and that statistically grass is his best surface, so really it’s not a surprise Chardy is a $7 outsider.

The last time the players faced off was earlier this year in Dubai with Berdych claiming a straight sets victory after the first set was forced to a tiebreaker.

Prediction: Berdych will undoubtedly come out firing in his 12th Wimbledon campaign and whilst Chardy will put up a fight, it won’t be anywhere near enough to get over the top of Berdych. Chardy winning the first set however will be pivotal or things could turn very ugly.

Berdych in four sets.
