Match result:

Sam Stosur is out of Wimbledon after losing twelve straight games to CoCo Vandeweghe in their third round match.

VANDEWEGHE 6 6
STOSUR 2 0

“She could not have played any worse if she tried.” Those were the words from Davis Cup captain Wally Masur after the match between Stosur and Vandeweghe.

To be fair to the Australian, the American made her play like that.

It all started well for Stosur who raced to a 2-0 lead with an early break.

From then on it was all Vandeweghe who won 12 straight matches.

The power in her game, which was brutal at times, didn’t allow Stosur to play her game.

She would be compromised in her shots and made plenty of errors as the ball came back to her quickly.

Vandeweghe also attacked her serve, particularly the second serve.

Stosur won just 26% of points on her second serve and lost 30 points overall.

You won’t win many games when that happens.

Stosur would save three break points in the 3rd game, but not save the 4th as Vandeweghe broke back.

The Aussie would then have two break points, but not get any, as the American leveled at 2-2.

After that, it was all the American.

She would win 16 of the next 22 points to take the first set 6-2, and win six straight games.

In the second set, the dominance continued.

Stosur would not have a game point, as she would be bagelled.

Vandeweghe would win 24 of the 33 points in the set, to win with ease.

It was a dominant display for the American who will be a dangerous opponent in the next few rounds.

For Stosur she will want to forget the match quickly and focus on the American hard court season.

Vandeweghe will now play the winner of Sloane Stephens and Lucie Safarova in the next round.

Match preview:

It’s a repeat of the second round at the Australian Open as Australia’s Sam Stosur takes on CoCo Vandeweghe in the third round of Wimbledon.

Stosur, after losing that match in straight sets, will be out for revenge after the American outplayed her on Rod Laver Arena.

The Aussie didn’t play bad, as can sometimes happen in Australia, she was instead outplayed by Vandeweghe.

The power in her game, which was explosive, was too much for Stosur in that match.

Since then though, as has been the case in her game, she has played some inconsistent tennis.

She has only made one quarter final, on grass at Hertogenbosch, and struggled on clay and the hard courts after the Australian Open.

The American though is comfortable on this surface. She won the corresponding event in Hertogenbosch last year which was her first title win.

She will be looking to make the fourth round at a Grand Slam for the first time with a win against Stosur. Stosur, with limited play before the event, has had the best Wimbledon of her career.

Two dominant wins have her in the third round and she is a chance of making the fourth round for the first time at the All-England club.

These two have faced each other three times with two wins to Vandeweghe and one to Stosur. In 2011, at the US Open, Stosur won 6-3 6-4.

This match will all be about Vandeweghe and the power in her game. If she hits winners at will, and serves well, then Stosur will be no match for her.

If Stosur can rattle her, with her slice and serve, and get errors from Vandeweghe then the Aussie is a big chance. Unfortunately for Stosur, I see this as a similar match to the Australian Open.

She might win a set tonight but Vandeweghe will be too strong.

Prediction – Vandeweghe 2-1.
