Scott commits to Origin despite impending neck surgery

Queensland prop Matt Scott says he will probably require end of season neck surgery but has confirmed he will run out in the State of Origin series decider in Brisbane.

Scott showed he was on track after chiming in at the Maroons’ first field session at their Gold Coast camp on Thursday.

Other injury concerns Cooper Cronk (knee) and Josh Papalii (knee) also took part with Darius Boyd (groin) restricted to light duties.

The Cowboys workhorse was a late arrival at the Maroons camp ahead of July 8’s Origin III after remaining at his Townsville base to receive treatment on a bulging disc in his neck.

Scott says he has endured the injury for years but expects to go under the knife at season’s end – an operation similar to the pre-season surgery Cowboys teammate and NSW rival prop James Tamou endured.

“It’s an ongoing injury and I had a cortisone there Monday which had been booked in for a week or two,” Scott said.

“(It’s) just the disc and getting a bit of nerve pain referring down the arms.

“It’s something I’ve been playing with for a few years.

“It’s just progressively worse so it’s something I’ve got to take care of a bit more.”

Asked if it required surgery, Scott said: “I’ve talked with the specialist in Townsville and we’ll review it at the end of the year.

“But it’s probably a high possibility at the moment.”
