James Faulkner has been charged with drink-driving, having returned a reading of almost three the UK’s legal limit.
Faulkner, who starred for Australia during their World Cup triumph, has been released on bail and will face court in Manchester on July 21.
The allrounder is currently on the books of English club Lancashire, who stood him down from Friday night’s Twenty20 clash with Yorkshire.
Faulkner faces further punishment as per Cricket Australia’s code of behaviour, having been charged for unbecoming conduct that is ‘harmful to the interests of cricket’.
The 25-year-old said in statement he had “let people down”.
“I can’t excuse my actions,” Faulkner said.
“My decision to drive was an error in judgment.
“I apologise unreservedly and accept any penalty handed to me by Cricket Australia and the relevant authorities.”
Faulkner suffered a side strain in February and was in doubt for the World Cup.
But he returned to the XI during the group stage and earned man-of-the-match honours in the final.
Cricket Australia general manager of team performance Pat Howard termed it a wake-up call.
“For James and all other Australian cricketers around the importance of responsible decision making,” Howard said in a statement.
“It is clear that he made a very poor decision to get behind the wheel of a car after drinking and that decision had clear potential to cause serious harm to him and others.
“It is also clear that he is very disappointed and embarrassed.”
Howard noted he was extremely disappointed with Faulkner and had “informed him of the consequences under English Law and Cricket Australia’s own regulations”.
