Lewis Hamilton has taken pole position for the British Grand Prix, edging out Nico Rosberg by one tenth of a second during their first run in Q3, with neither driver able to improve during their second runs.

Rosberg had enjoyed a comfortable buffer of Hamilton during practice all weekend, despite having to endure a gearbox change and leaking hydraulics.

Rosberg blamed his poor qualifying performance on a strange feeling with his left front tyre, saying, “There was something wrong with my left front – something was very wrong, we need to look into what it is.”

One driver who did improve was Felipe Massa, securing third spot on the grid after finding some time in his Williams to move ahead of teammate Valtteri Bottas, implying Mercedes could be right on the limit while Williams are finding a larger window of operation courtesy of their recent upgrades.

Kimi Raikkonen out-qualified Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel for just the second time this season to place him fifth on the grid. Vettel found himself in heavy traffic on his final run and failed to improve on his modest first run.

Red Bull’s Daniil Kvyat jumped ahead of the Toro Rosso of Carlos Sainz Jr by just one-hundredth of a second to finish seventh, while teammate Daniel Ricciardo found himself at the bottom of the top 10 after losing his best lap in Q3 for running over the track limits – his time on that lap being good enough to edge him in front of Kvyat.
