Time for a Blues dynasty: Merrin

A NSW win in the State of Origin decider could set the scene for an era of Blues dominance in rugby league’s interstate arena, impact forward Trent Merrin believes.

NSW will chase back-to-back series wins for the first time since 2005 at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday night, after last year ending Queensland’s unprecedented eight-year stranglehold on Origin.

The Blues won three successive series from 2003-05 during the last period of NSW dominance.

Between 1999 and 2005 the Maroons only enjoyed one series win amid fears the concept could be destroyed by NSW’s superiority.

Those concerns were blown away by Queensland’s unprecedented winning streak, and Origin continues to be one of the yearly highlights on the Australian sporting calendar.

But now with Queensland’s great team on the brink of a major rebuild given the age of some of their biggest stars, and the wealth of young NSW talent coming through, back-rower Merrin said there is a sense among the playing group a Blues dynasty could be on the way.

“Most definitely,” he said.

“We are building a great culture here, we have some great young talent and we are heading forward, that is the most exciting thing, we can feel it when we are out on the field when we are playing Queensland.

“If we can do a job on them on Wednesday night it would be a great step for the future.”
