After a week’s break, we are back, with all the latest tennis from Aussies playing overseas.

This week’s focus is on Wimbledon as the first week at the All-England club started.

Wimbledon
The singles had 16 Australians competing, the most since 1995, when 17 competed at the All England Lawn Tennis Club.

Nine survived the first round, as Jarmila Gajdosova, Daria Gavrilova, Luke Saville, and Thanasi Kokkinakis all lost to seeds in straight sets. Two others, John-Patrick Smith and Marinko Matosevic, lost after being two sets up against Kenny de Schepper and Liam Broady respectively.

Finally, Lleyton Hewitt’s singles campaign ended after an epic five-set loss to Jarkko Nieminen.

The Aussie fought all the way to the end but couldn’t get over the line.

His final Wimbledon campaign officially ended on Monday, July 6, with losses in both men’s doubles and mixed doubles. He made the third round with Thanasi Kokkinakis after two comeback five-set wins in the opening two rounds.

The most impressive win came from John Millman, who beat 19th seed Tommy Robredo in straight sets – an amazing performance from a player who was ranked outside the top 1000 last year.

His run ended in the second round, with a five-set loss to Marcos Baghdatis, after leading by two sets to love.

Matt Ebden, who won his first main-draw match at Wimbledon, also fell in the second round, to John Isner, in straight sets. James Duckworth, after defeating Malek Jaziri, fell to Sam Groth in an all-Australian second-round clash.

Groth faced Roger Federer in the third round, going down gallantly in four sets to the Swiss world number two. Bernard Tomic joined Groth with a third round exit after a straight-set loss to Novak Djokovic.

On the women’s side, both Sam Stosur and Casey Dellacqua were eliminated in the third round.

Dellacqua lost to Agnieszka Radwanska – who also beat Ajla Tomljanović in the second round – while Stosur fell to Coco Vandeweghe.

The last Australian standing in singles was Nick Kyrgios, who progressed to the fourth round with an impressive win against Milos Raonic. The Canberra-based player then fell to Richard Gasquet in the fourth round.

This isn’t the end of Australia’s Wimbledon campaign though.

Victorian John Peers is in the quarter finals with Jamie Murray – the brother of Andy. They defeated the 2014 champions Vasek Pospisil and Jack Sock in the third round.

Dellacqua – after making the doubles final at the French Open – is into the quarters of Wimbledon doubles with Yaroslava Shvedova. They take on the number one seeds Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza in the final eight clash.

In mixed doubles, Jarmila Gajdosvoa and Anastasia Rodionova are still involved in the round of 16.

ATP Challenger
Jacob Grills and Jason Kubler were the only Aussies involved in ATP Challenger events last week, both competing at the event in Marburg, Germany. Grills lost in the second round of qualifying, while Kubler, who made the second round of qualifying at Wimbledon, lost in the second round to finalist Nils Langer.

ITF
Australia won four titles among the 30 ITF events on last week around the world.

Leading the charge was Alexandra Nancarrow in Serbia.

In Prokuplje, 260 kilometres from the capital Belgrade, Nancarrow won her third and fourth titles at the venue in the space of two weeks. After winning the singles and doubles title last week, at the first event, she backed it up this week at the second event held on the same courts.

She has an 18-0 record over the last two weeks and has now secured her third singles triumph and her 17th doubles title.

In Canada, at the F4 event in Kelowna, Omar Jasika won his second ITF title for the year.

The young Victorian was pushed all the way by Eric Quigley and won in a final set tiebreaker. He now moves into the top 300 and is starting to rise nicely in the rankings – he could find himself in the top 200 by the end of the year.

In the Netherlands, Maverick Banes won his second doubles title in back-to-back weeks, the eighth doubles title of his career.

Finally, in Egypt, Western Australian Astra Sharma made her first semi-final at the $10,000 Sharm El Sheikh event.

Before last week, she had only won one match on the ITF circuit; she now has four.
