After such a long period of Queensland State of Origin dominance, the NSW Blues have a chance to string consecutive Origin series wins together for the first time since 2005. However, history in on the side of the Maroons.

There have been 17 do-or-die deciders in the history of State of Origin, of those, 11 have been claimed by Queensland, with just four going the way of the Blues.

In 1982, the first official Origin series, it was the Blues’ Phil Sigsworth and Phil Duke that combined for a monumental mistake in the dying stages of the match, that gifted Queensland the win.

In 1991, a stunning try to Des Hasler gave the Blues the lead late in the game. However, the incentive provided to the Maroons by the announcement of Wally Lewis’ retirement following the match gave Queensland the lift they needed, the match being won off the boot of Mal Meninga.

In 2012, with scores locked at 20-20 with five minutes remaining, it was the boot of Cooper Cronk that would prove the difference as Queensland claimed their seventh consecutive series.

So far this year we have seen two thrilling encounters: Queensland scraping home by a single point in Game 1, before NSW levelled the series before a record crowd at the MCG.

Tonight, Queensland’s temple of football, hosts to the decider.
