Match Result: Novak Djokovic has won his 9th Grand Slam title, and third at Wimbledon, with a four set win over Roger Federer on Sunday night at the All England club.

DJOKOVIC 7 6 6 6
FEDERER 6 7 4 3

In four sets of high quality tennis, Federer and Djokovic played another classic, as the world number 1 eventually broke down his opponent.

The match started well for Federer as he gained an early break in the sixth game of the first set.

Djokovic would respond though with a break back in the next game.

He would then save a set point in the 12th game, with Federer leading 6-5, to bring the first set into a tiebreaker.

The breaker would be dominated by the world number one, as he won seven of the next eight points, to take the set.

Games would then go on serve in the second set, until another tiebreaker decided the second set.

Both players would have chances though to break.

Federer had two chances with Djokovic having a set point at 5-4.

The 17 time Grand Slam champion saved the set point and forced the second set into another breaker.

What followed was nothing short of extraordinary.

Djokovic would race to a 6-3 lead, before Federer saved all three set points.

He would then save another three set points, to bring it to six overall in the tiebreaker, as the breaker dragged on.

Finally, at 11-10 in the breaker, Federer would seal the set and level the match at one set all after saving seven set points overall.

It was an amazing tiebreaker full of drama and huge shot making.

Unfortunately for Federer, it took almost all the energy from him.

Djokovic would respond in the third set, and break early, to take it 6-4.

After a rain delay, in the 5th game of the set, Djokovic held serve comfortably to lead two sets to one.

Djokovic would then break in the 5th game of the 4th set to put himself in the drivers seat.

One more break, on Federer’s serve in the 9th game, would seal Djokovic’s 3rd Wimbledon title.

The main difference was the unforced errors from Federer. He made too many and paid the ultimate price.

He also became fatigued as the game went on as Djokovic used his fitness to win the match.

The players will now focus on the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the year, which starts at the end of August.

Match preview: It’s a repeat of the 2014 final as Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer battle it out for the 2015 men’s title at Wimbledon. Join The Roar for a live blog of the action from 10:30pm AEST.

Tonight’s final will be the 40th match between the two since their first battle in 2006.

Since then, they have almost split the meetings, with Federer winning 20 and Djokovic 19. In the last 19 months, since the start of 2014, they have played 9 times.

Six of those have been in the final with Djokovic winning five of them. He leads to head to head 5-4 during that time.

This will be the third match against each other at Wimbledon.

Federer won the first with Djokovic gaining revenge in a five set classic last year.

That match, which saw Djokovic win three of the last four sets, saw the Serbian just scrape home against the crowd favourite.

The difference in the match was Federer’s second serve, which was punished by Djokovic.

Both players have been impressive in this tournament. Federer has only lost one set and has not been broken in 140 out of his last 141 games.

Djokovic, on the other hand, has only lost two sets with both coming against Kevin Anderson in the fourth round.

This should be a high quality match between the two. The serving of both will be incredibly important.

Federer served well against Murray in some of the best tennis I have seen him play in years.

He landed plenty of first serves, hit plenty of aces, and plenty of winners, to frustrate Murray.

Djokovic, in comparison, has been broken multiple times in the tournament but has not lost a set with a service break.

Whoever serves well will have a good shot at winning the title.

The battle of the baseline will also be important. Both like to dictate the point, and hit plenty of winners.

Federer, unlike the last match against Murray, won’t have it all his own way. Djokovic will hit winners from both flanks and try to dictate the match on his terms.

This promises to be a fascinating match made tougher to pick with the form Federer is in.

He played sublime tennis against Murray and if he repeats that against Djokovic then he can win his eighth title at Wimbledon.

Djokovic isn’t number one for no reason though, and will start as favourite for the match.

I predict him to win the tournament but this has all the makings of a classic.

Prediction – Djokovic 3-2.
