Novak Djokovic won his third Wimbledon and ninth Slam with a 7-6 6-7 6-4 6-3 win over Roger Federer early this morning.

The first two sets were simply magnificent tennis as the world’s two top-ranked players exploded with a series of ground strokes that left the packed centre court breathless.

On the stats there wasn’t a struck match between them.

The first set was Federer’s when he broke in the ninth game, but Djokovic broke back and in the end Federer double faulted on set point.

Aces – Djokovic 6-2.
Double faults – 1-1.
Winners – Federer 15-11.
Unforced errors – Federer 11-3.
Break point conversions – Djokovic 1 from 2, Federer 1 from 3.
Points won – 37-37.

In the second set Djokovic held five set points, but a courageous Federer stuck to his guns to level.

Aces – Federer 6-4.
Double faults – Federer 1-0.
Winners – Federer 24-15.
Unforced errors – Federer 12-8.
Points won – 51-51.

Djokovic broke in the third game of the third set, and at 3-2 rain started to fall, and play was suspended for 20 minutes while the roof remained open.

That was the tme when Federer had a chance to talk to his coach Stefan Edberg in the shed.

But no matter what was said, Djokovic came back firing – and that was that.

At the presentation, Federer and Djokovic commanded the scene like the two champions they are.

Federer said, “Novak played great today, and for the last two weeks, last year and the year before that.”

“But I’m still hungry and motivated to keep playing,” as more thunderous applause broke out.

Djokovic came back with, “it’s a privilege to play against Roger, he’s done so much for our sport and players of my generation look up to him.

“He makes you push your limits”.

So Novak Djokovic joins his coach Boris Becker as a three-time Wimbledon champion, denying Roger Federer a record eight.

But the two of them raised the Wimbledon performance bar for another year.
