2014 Kentucky Derby winner and Triple Crown contender California Chrome could have run his last race with a leg injury ruling him out for at least the rest of 2015.
The reigning American horse of the year has suffered a bruised cannon bone – and while the condition is not life threatening, he may not be seen on track again.
“It’s not life threatening or anything, but it looks like he’ll be out for the rest of the year,” trainer Art Sherman told Daily Racing Form.
California Chrome has tackled the 2014 American Triple Crown – recently taken out by American Pharoah – after winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, but finished tied for fourth place in the Belmont Stakes, and was later found to have suffered a hoof injury.
The horse was sent to compete at Royal Ascot’s Group 1 Prince Of Wales’ Stakes over 2000m, but was scratched due to an minor injury at the time.
With the horse looking set to be sold, the cannon bruise was detected in routine scans, with any sales called off.
X-Rays reveal cannon bone bruise yesterday. CA Chrome will not compete in Arlington Million.
