Louis van Gaal’s latest catch is Bastian Schweinsteiger, who has signed a three-year contract worth £15 million. This is not a new liaison between Van Gaal and Schweinsteiger, as Van Gaal coached Bayern Munich from 2009 to 2011.

Schweinsteiger’s time at FC Bayern Munich was studded with success, with eight Bundesliga titles, seven German Cups, one Champions League and the FIFA World Cup 2014 to his name.

Despite his long loyalty to the club, Bastian decided to call it quits and request the transfer to the Red Devils. At 30 years of age, the experienced midfielder has chosen a new path in a different league to both test himself and hone his skills.

Furthermore, being the first German to play at Man U, Schweinsteiger adds another gem to his collection.

Schweinsteiger can star in several different formations thanks to his versatility. However it is most likely that Van Gaal will favour a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Undoubtedly there are many disappointed Munich fans who believe they have lost a true legend. He asserted that Manchester United is the only club that he would leave Munich for but this serves little comfort for fans. Many speculated that Schweinsteiger’s future performances could be marred by injury from the 2014 World Cup. Basti has attempted to counter attack comments about his fitness, injury woes and age by reiterating how keen he is to win more titles.
