Josh Walker kicked a career-high five majors and Steve Johnson moved to third spot on Geelong’s all-time goalkicking list as the Cats trounced Brisbane by 56 points on Saturday at Simonds Stadium.

In a match which never threatened to reach any great heights, the Cats increased their lead at every change to win 17.11 (113) to 8.9 (57) against the bottom-placed Lions, who are riding a 10-match losing streak.

Geelong improved their win-loss record to 9-7 although they will likely still sit just outside the top eight at the conclusion of round 18.

As poor as Brisbane were for much of the day, it was still the first time in five matches where they had kicked more than seven goals.

Johnson needed just 12 seconds to move to equal third on the Cats’ goalkicking table, snapping the opening major of the game and the 441st of his career before many of the spectators had taken their seats.

Another goal in each of the second and third quarters took Johnson to 443 in his career, behind only legendary Cats marksmen Gary Ablett senior and Doug Wade.

The Cats led by 18 points at quarter-time and extended that advantage to 22 by the long break.

Walker did most of his damage in the first half with four of his five goals.

The Cats blew the margin out to 48 points with a dominant third quarter before cruising to victory in the final term.

The Cats had most of the dominant midfielders on the ground, led by Cam Guthrie, Josh Caddy and skipper Joel Selwood, while Brisbane ruckman Stefan Martin was among the Lions’ best players.

Former skipper Jed Adcock played a lone hand up forward for the visitors with four of their eight goals.

Brisbane onballer Allen Christensen was a mostly peripheral figure in his first match against Geelong since his off-season move to the Lions.
