The Cats are just half a game out of finals at the moment and win today would move them into the top eight, albeit only temporarily.

Brisbane on the other hand are still sitting at dead last on the ladder and don’t look likely to rise from that position this week.

Last week was another low point for them as they lost to North Melbourne at the Gabba for the first time in a decade, and skipper Tom Rockliff was held to just 16 possessions.

Dayne Beams and Pearce Hanley missed that game through injury, but are back this week, and the Lions will be looking to make a serious statement this week.

Does that give them a chance against the Cats down at Simonds Stadium? It’s not off the cards. They have had some close games with the Cats in recent years, with their Ash McGrath after-the-siren win the biggest highlight.

Geelong’s loss to Melbourne at home just a few weeks ago showed the AFL world that they are vulnerable anywhere now, and the Brisbane players will have watched that game tape time and time again.

The Cats have that extra motivation however, the chance to build their finals chances, that just may see them over the line.

They do have one major advantage over the Lions which is their excellent number of quality key defenders. Given the Lions forward line can only muster the likes of inexperienced Daniel McStay and Jonothan Freeman this week, someone like Harry Taylor should have a serious day out for the Cats.

Oh, and one last little fun fact. After 28 matches head to head in AFL history, Geelong and Brisbane are tied at 14 apiece – today’s winner will move to the front on the all-time chart.

Prediction
While the Lions aren’t without a chance, there’s no doubt that Geelong are the better-placed team to win this one.
