Jarryd Hayne‘s quest for a place in the NFL is continuing to move in the right direction as he impressed during the San Fransisco 49ers‘ training camp in Santa Clara on Tuesday, scoring his first touchdown.

The successful play came from a Colin Kaepernick pass on Day 4 of the camp during a padded practice match – the first chance Hayne has had to show what he is made of while donning a full NFL kit.

It’s an impressive start for the NRL convert, who has previously stated that the transition to wearing pads and a helmet had been challenging.

The performance is also promising considering Hayne is still recovering from minor foot surgery, noting in a recent press conference that he is yet to return to peak fitness.

“I’m obviously still getting my speed back and fitness, but you know I’m probably 80-90 per cent which is good,” Hayne said.

Although he managed to impress his team mates, head coach Jim Tomsula was tight lipped when probed on the likelihood of Hayne making the cut for the 49ers’ 53-man squad.

“I don’t have a crystal ball and I don’t want to predict. It doesn’t do any good for anybody,” Tomsula said.
