FFA Cup Results: Western Sydney Wanderers 1-0 Brisbane Roar, Wellington Pheonix 1-0 Central Coast Mariners, Oakleigh Cannons 1(5)-1(4) FNQ Heat, Perth Glory 2(4)-2(3) Newcastle Jets.

Match Review

Oakleigh Cannons avoided a scare from FNQ Heat, who pushed the Melbourne NPL side to their limits tonight. The match was forced into penalties following a 1-1 draw at the end of extra time. Tamas missed his penalty for FNQ, and Oakleigh capitalised on the mistake, winning 5-4.

Perth Glory also won via penalties against Newcastle Jets, with that match ending 2-2 at the end of extra time. David Carney scored off a Anthony Golec mistake, and Sidnei equalised for the Jets in the 88th minute of play. Marinkovic then scored a penalty in the 2nd minute of Extra time, but Newcastle weren’t going to make it easy, with Haliti equalising late in Extra Time. Jerrad Tyson was the hero for Perth, saving three spot kicks to put Perth through 4-3.

Western Sydney progressed past Brisbane Roar thanks to a solo goal from Golgol Mehbratu. The winger was looking dangerous all match, and finally made it count in the second half when he glided past his defender inside the box, then tucked the ball past Jamie Young to put the Wanderers in front.

Wellington Pheonix was the final team to progress, beating Central Coast 1-0, as young winger Kwabena Appiah capitalised on a heavy touch from debutant goalkeeper Paul Izzo.

The FFA Cup Round of 32 continues tonight as the final four spots in the coveted Round of 16 will be decided. Join us from 7:15pm (AEST) for live scores and updates on all four matches.

With 12 teams having already progressed, the last eight will battle it out tonight to progress to the first stage that offers all competitors competition winnings.

Western Sydney take on Brisbane Roar in the televised match tonight with Perth Glory playing the Newcastle Jets, the Oakleigh Cannons playing the FNQ Heat, and the Central Coast Mariners coming up against the Wellington Phoenix in the other matches.

Western Sydney Wanderers vs Brisbane Roar

Tony Popovic’s side has gone through a much needed overhaul during the off-season, and is starting to look like more and more like a premiership winning side.

With Spainards Dimas Delgado and Andreu Guerao now joined by centre back Alberto Aguilar, Australian recruit Mitch Nichols is surrounded by quality at a new-look Wanderers.

Golgol Mebrahtu is also back to full fitness, and started their last outing against the Mariners in Coffs Harbour, though only lasted 45 minutes in his first start in over a year.

In defence, Scott Neville is joined by Scott Jamieson on the opposite flank – both adding attacking prowess as well as a more sturdy defensive line.

Brisbane Roar have impressed in their two big encounters during the off-season, with a win against La Liga Giants Villereal followed by a solid performance against Liverpool six weeks later.

Aloisi has brought stability to the Roar, as well youngster Jamie Maclaren who is expected to shine this season along with Devante Clut and Brandon Borrello.

With Brattan, McKay, Broich, Petratos and Lustica to choose from as well in the front third, Brisbane will be no pushovers this season.

Prediction: It’s tough to pick a winner, as both these sides have come a long way since last season, but I think Western Sydney have some gelling to do before the results will start coming. Brisbane to win this one 3-1.

Central Coast Mariners vs Wellington Phoenix

Tonight’s match is the first test for Wellington to see how they cope with life after Nathan Burns. Blake Powell has come in for Ernie Merrick’s side, but has never proven himself at this level, so may be a bit of a gamble.

Look out for Roly Bonevacia and the creativity of Michael McGlinchey.

For the Mariners, this match serves as the perfect way to leave a mark on the competition by overcoming one of the stronger A-League sides from last season.

The Mariners front line is one to watch, with Fabio Ferreira and Mitch Austin lining up on either wing. Austin comes from the lower leagues in England, and has starred for Central Coast in pre-season.

Oakleigh Cannons vs FNQ Heat

FNQ Heat didn’t get off to the best of starts last year, with the Queensland side losing 4-1 in the round of 32 to Sydney United 58. This year, however, they have a much better chance of victory, against a VPL side who aren’t performing too well in their domestic competition.

Look out for Alex Smith, goalkeeper Nick Mooney, and in-form striker Jamie Carroll.

For Oakleigh, who have never been this far in the competition, a win tonight could start to turn their disappointing season around, as they seem to have the players to cause some damage in the FFA Cup.

Striker Mirjan Pavlovic has had plenty of A-League experience – the striker scoring four goals in the A-League in 25 appearances for Wellington and Newcastle. Also watch winger Kofi Danning, who should be finding his feet again after a debilitating injury in Belgium two years ago.

Perth Glory vs Newcastle Jets

Both of these teams have undergone a huge overhaul during the off-season, though Perth Glory were somewhat forced to find new players as the controversy from last season dwindled their playing squad.

Youngsters Hagi Gligor and Alex Grant have come to the squad to prove themselves in what may be a last chance for both at this level. It’s looking like a year of re-building the squad, but if players like Grant and Gligor can step up and perform well, then Perth could do better than expected.

Newcastle had a disappointing season last year, which culminated in the wooden spoon and the loss of several quality players. Now they have an uphill battle to avoid the same outcome as last season, and that battle starts tonight against an equally vulnerable side.

Look out for former NPL striker Andy Brennan and young ex Brisbane player Lachlan Jackson. Both are relatively unknown, and two exciting acquisitions for the Jets.
