Wallabies captain Stephen Moore appreciates the hype surrounding this weekend’s blockbuster against the All Blacks, but says his team must shut it out if they are to break a 13-year Bledisloe Cup drought.
The Wallabies face the All Blacks at Eden Park on Saturday, a week after beating the world champions 27-19 in Sydney to win the Rugby Championship and set up their first Bledisloe decider since 2008 at a venue where Australia haven’t beaten the Kiwis since 1986.
Victory would give the Wallabies the Bledisloe Cup for the first time since 2002, while Moore would become the first Australian captain to lift the trophy since George Gregan.
“There’s obviously a lot positivity around the win on the weekend and we want our supporters … people on the street to be happy about it,” Moore said on Wednesday.
“That’s a real positive for the game in Australia, but that can’t cross over into our thinking when we prepare for that next match and that’s a key point.”
Moore admitted the side had done a good job getting on with business so far in their build-up, thanks largely to coach Michael Cheika.
“It’s not hard with Cheiks reminding us all the time about the importance of that (hard work) and just improving each day and training really hard and that’s been our focus this week,” he said.
“Making sure we are focused and we are not letting any of that stuff put us in a false frame of mind about where we are at … we’ve still got a hell of a lot of work to do and a long way to go to get to where we want to be and we’ve tried to emphasise that this week.”
The Wallabies’ approach to the decider this week has been simple, according to Moore.
“If you look across the game (last week), everything that we did, we are going to have to do better over there,” Moore said.
