Former UFC middleweight champion and mixed martial arts legend Anderson ‘The Spider’ Silva (34-6), is set to undergo a disciplinary hearing before the Nevada State Athletic Commission this Friday regarding his failed UFC 183 drug test.

Silva, who returned to fighting earlier this year after a year-long layoff due to a horrific leg break in his rematch against Chris Weidman (13-0), defeated Nick Diaz (26-10, 1NC) in one of the most anticipated fights in UFC history at UFC 183.

However, his victory was tainted by both his and Diaz’s failed drug tests.

Silva tested positive for drostanolone metabolites twice on the day of his fight, and then tested positive for androstane in a out-of-competition random test.

Diaz tested positive for marijuana metabolites, and is a repeat offender for that particular substance.

Silva remains adamant that he is innocent, and part of his defence to the failed tests is that he was taking ‘sexual performance’ medication.

“Administering or using a supplement for the purpose of enhancing sexual performance and testing of the supplement revealed that the supplement was contaminated with an Exogenous Anabolic Agent: Drostanolone metabolite,” wrote Silva’s lawyer, Michael Alonso.

Alonso also addressed Silva’s positive test for androstane, and said that other medication that he was taking at the time contained the substance.

Anderson Silva is widely considered to the the greatest pound-for-pound fighter of all time, and he has been vocal about his desire to return to the octagon.

However if he’s found guilty and suspended, his career may well be over.
