Bolt triumphs over Gatlin and a segway

Actions always speak louder than words and Usain Bolt proved yet again that when it comes to the big events there is no one better in men’s sprinting.

In the lead up to the World Championships the talk was about the fast times of American Justin Gatlin at the Rome Diamond League event in June and how the reformed drug cheat was the man that could end Bolt’s dominance.

He went close in the 100-metres, just 0.01 behind Bolt but in the 200 it was hardly a contest with Bolt winning by a couple of metres.

Bolt’s winning time of 19.55 seconds was well outside his best, but as is always the case with the Jamaican, you felt like he had more in the tank if needed.

After the race Bolt was bowled over by a cameraman who lost control of his segway. It had the potential to seriously injure the star athlete, but Bolt laughed off the incident with reporters suggesting someone, possibly Gatlin, had paid the guy to take him out to ‘give someone else a chance of winning.’

It’s hard to imagine many professional athletes being so relaxed about a serious incident but perhaps it’s because Bolt realises he has accomplished everything there is in the sprinting game. Any challengers that come along, he sizes them up and raises the bar, if he has to.

With athletics facing some dark times from numerous positive drug tests, Bolt continues to be a shining light in the sport. He’ll now turn his attention to the next big event, the Olympics in 2016.

The 29-year-old hasn’t yet decided if it will be his swansong but if it is you wouldn’t like to bet against the Jamaican winning the 100 and 200 double no matter who he comes up against.
