Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova will defend their Brisbane International titles in January.

Federer notched his 1000th career win when he claimed this year’s Brisbane title by downing big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic in the final.

The historic win set up a year of resurgence for the 34-year-old Federer.

The Wimbledon runner-up has won five tournaments this year.

He will vie for an 18th grand slam title at the US Open after his Cincinnati Masters final triumph over world No.1 Novak Djokovic.

“I’m excited, especially after this year with the win and the 1000th match win – it was like a picture perfect moment,” said the Swiss world No.2.

“I’m coming back maybe with a little bit more pressure next year having to defend (the title), but I’ve played there two years now and it’s gone so well.”

Federer will be joined at the Australian Open warm-up by Japan’s world No.4 Kei Nishikori.

Sharapova also confirmed her return after downing Serb Ana Ivanovic in the 2015 Brisbane decider.

The Brisbane International starts on January 3.
