John Millman will be looking to continue his impressive run, over the last few months, with a win against Sergiy Stakhovsky at the 1st round of the US Open.

The last two months have been an incredible ride for the Queenslander.

At Wimbledon, he would win his first ever Grand Slam match, before losing to Marcos Baghdatis in 5 sets in the 2nd round.

This moved him into the top 100 for the first time in his career, as he attacked more points at Challenger level.

This month he got those with a brilliant run in American events.

11 wins in his next 12 matches at the Challenger level saw him move to 72 in the world with two titles in Lexington and Aptos.

He is now into the main draw of a Grand Slam on his own terms for the first time in his career.

Another 100 points should also confirm his place in the main draw of the Australian Open for next year.

His focus now will be on Ukrainian, Sergiy Stakhovsky, whose claim to fame was knocking off Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2013.

That would be underselling him though, with the current world number 60 a four time ATP winner on the circuit.

He has also been in the top 100 at the end of the year for six of the last seven seasons. You can’t underestimate him.

Stakhovsky has struggled at the US Open though, losing four 1st round matches in a row. This is the perfect match for Millman to win if he plays at his best.

They have faced each other before, with the Queenslander winning in the final round of qualifying for the ATP event in Munich in 2013. That win was significant in the worst possible way for Millman.

It was his last win, for almost 12 months, after he re-aggravated a shoulder injury during that match, and another two clashes after that. To win that match was an achievement in itself with the injury.

The contest was also on clay, a surface Millman isn’t great at.

With this match being on hard court, Millman is more favoured to win the match. The key will be the baseline battle. The Queenslander’s game is focused on the baseline and if he can win more rallies than Stakhovsky, the Australian will win.

This is a match the Aussie can win, and I predict him to do it.

It might take four or five sets but the Queenslander will continue his incredible run.

Prediction – Millman in 4 sets.
