Former two time US Open champion, and the eighth seed for the tournament Rafael Nadal gets another campaign underway with a potential danger game against the up-and-coming Croatian Borna Coric. Join The Roar for live scores of this match from around 10:30am (AEST), following the Serena Williams vs Vitalia Diatchenko match.

Nadal has had an ordinary season in the Grand Slams by his lofty standards and it has seen him fall all the way to eighth in the world rankings.

Entering the final Grand Slam of the year, he hasn’t made it past the quarter-finals, and suffered a shock second-round exit at Wimbledon.

This would make Nadal determined to at least make the semi-finals, and it starts with a tough challenge in the form of Coric.

Coric’s form has been all over the place in the lead-up to the US Open, yet the 18-year-old has risen to 35th in the world playing an exciting style of tennis that could well upset Nadal’s rhythm.

He has only participated at the US Open on a single occasion, knocked out in the second-round last year. Making the third round of the French Open earlier this year was his best Grand Slam performance to date.

The pair have only faced off on a single occasion, late last year in Basel, with Coric coming from nowhere to surprise Nadal in straight sets.

Prediction
Nadal has had an ordinary season by his standards and dropped right down the world rankings, while Coric will be incredibly keen to impress. Nadal should do just enough though and I’ll take the conservative option, however don’t be surprised if the upset does occur.
