Serena Williams is on her home soil again and will be looking to defend her crown of US Open champion that she took home last year in Flushing Meadows.

The first seed is hunting her fourth grand slam for the calendar year and will not be afraid to terrorise her opponent. It is arguably one of the sporting stories of the year, and is worth following just to see whether Serena can complete a feat many thought impossible.

The American is one of nine Americans in her quarter and could likely set up an all-American matchup in the third round with either Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Coco Vandeweghe or Sloane Stephens.

Diatchenko has had a shocking 2015 campaign with only one win in two and a half months. The 25-year old Russian was forced to retire in her most recent match and will struggle against Serena Williams. It would be a huge confidence booster if she could win at least two games against the first seed.

Williams and Diatchenko have not played each other. Williams has a win-loss record of 8-2 in her last ten matches and is coming off a win in straight sets over Simona Halep 6-3, 7-6. Diatchenko retired to Petra Martic in her most recent match. She has a win-loss record of 4-6 in her last ten matches.

Serena, as we know, has a game for all surfaces against all opponents. She is always the favourite in her matches, but immeasurably so here.

Prediction
Serena Williams will ease through to the second round.

Williams in straight sets.
